About this deal

Both the New York avant-garde and the members of the cult of The Secret History who idolise its characters might consider the novel’s suggestion that groups of outsiders, too, are subject to the laws of nature and of society. Part thriller, part coming-of-age campus novel and part Greek tragedy, The Secret History begins with one of literature's most memorable first lines; "The snow in the mountains was melting and Bunny had been dead for several weeks before we came to understand the gravity of our situation". Warner Brothers acquired the rights in 1992, with Alan J Pakula, the Oscar-nominated producer of To Kill A Mockingbird and director of All The President’s Men, overseeing the film’s development.

Maybe it was because of his clothes, which were like one of those lame but curiously impenetrable disguises from a comic book (why does no one ever see that 'bookish' Clark Kent, without his glasses, is Superman? A sought after first printing of Donna Tartt's debut novel, one of the most popular novels published in the 1990s. For both author and narrator, this interval was the period spent in a strange society, half a dozen strong, a little island within the island of a tiny college of rich Ivy League rejects in the Vermont countryside. That’s the paradox of being famous for being private, surely – still, Tartt remains fiercely protective of her personal life.

The Green Transition Weekly analysis of the shift to a new economy from the New Statesman's Spotlight on Policy team. With cloth binding and bespoke marbled endpapers, this gorgeous 30th-anniversary hardback edition of The Secret History is the perfect gift for fans! There's the obvious parallel, that it's set on a small campus and about intimate friendship, but also the general chilliness, a cruelty that you can't quite put your finger on, that makes you uneasy. So few people had the experience of opening a Black Lotus or Mox Sapphire when Magic was originally released that we wanted to recapture some of that iconic experience for generations new and old. Unlike Bret Easton Ellis and Jonathan Lethem, Tartt declined to contribute to either Anolik's oral history or the podcast. Television, with its growing ability to command huge budgets and draw A-list talent behind and in front of the camera, now feels like the best medium for Tartt’s story – “unless it was given space in which to breathe and expand, I don’t think [a film] would work,” Farr-Cox says. Elsewhere, in a 1992 essay for Harper’s magazine, Tartt painted a picture of a southern gothic childhood “submerged in a pretty powerful altered state of consciousness”, thanks to her great-grandfather’s insistence that she take codeine for her “bad tonsils”. The snow in the mountains was melting and Bunny had been dead for several weeks before we came to understand the gravity of our situation.
