About this deal

If Hawkins’ story of how the song came into being is anything to go by, it would seem that the original song in itself was a remastered version – seeing as the first recording of the song had a bluesy, ballad-like vibe to it, while the one that was released in 1956 was well known for containing the notorious screaming, courtesy a very in-form Screamin’ Jay. Freed suggested a gimmick to capitalize on the "demented" sound of "I Put a Spell on You": Hawkins wore a long cape, and appeared onstage by rising out of a coffin in the midst of smoke and fog. Guillotine Riot—There aren’t a ton of rock versions of “I Put a Spell on You”, but this cover from female-fronted Guillotine Riot veers into that lane in a beautiful way. But in 1957, neither he nor the record label seemed quite sure what they should do to follow up “I Put a Spell on You”. While it is not one of the more popular covers of Hawkins’ original, Natacha Atlas’ cover of ‘I Put a Spell on You’ was unique all the same.

Their recording was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal at the 53rd Grammy Awards. Screamin’ Lord Sutch would later go on to form the Monster Raving Loony Party, a political party intended as a joke that still continues to field candidates at every election twenty years after Sutch’s death. For whatever reason, it resonates with us – it could be the melody, it could be the lyrics, or it could just be an act of jumping on the ‘song cover’ bandwagon. As well as his stories about being a prisoner of war, he also used to claim on a regular basis that the reason he’d loved being in the military so much was because you were allowed to kill people and wouldn’t get punished for it.

Hawkins had recorded the song already in 1955 for Herb Slotkins's Grand label in a more sedate ballad style, but it remained unissued until 1984 (Collectables 1068 single). I learn something new with each new story, and I have often gone to the internet (and my cd collection) to discover and rediscover some of the greatest music ever recorded. A 2-count space ,with a lazy buoy ringing, and he repeats for a slowed, off-beat effect that is really scientific, really DJ Premier, really puts a spell on you. Covers, as we must realise, are an essential part of carrying the legacy of a song forward as well as proving the versatility of the original song. Jesse Cook—This one has some very cool guitar work at the top that hints at a flamenco guitar sound, and Jesse’s voice is so smooth and lovely.Thirty-three have been traced, so this seems to be one of those rare occasions where he was telling the truth.
