About this deal

If you ever wanted to tweak some of your system's components, you probably understand how specialized software solutions can help you achieve fast, adequate results. This is because you did not unzip the files and you are trying to run install-rtlsdr.bat from within the zip file. Remember to extract the files first, before running them. The Vendor ID ( VID, here 0x045E), Product ID ( PID, here 0x289) and (optionally) Interface ID ( MI) are also displayed under "USB ID" for your reference. If you leave your mouse over the Vendor ID, you should get the full name of the Vendor displayed. If the Vendor Name cannot be determined, and you know it, you are invited to report it to the USB ID Repository using the new button that will appear then. In the drop down box choose Bulk-In, Interface (Interface 0). This may also sometimes show up as something prefixed with "RTL28328U". That choice is also valid. For years - YEARS I SAY - Windows has been a huge hassle when you want to flash the firmware of various devices over USB.

When I run install-rtlsdr.bat a CMD/DOS window flashes on the screen briefly then disappears. Nothing is installed. Once the installation is started, just wait until it completes. Normally, the installation process takes a matter of seconds, but in some circumstances, if the local system policies cannot be temporarily overridden to disable the creation of a system restore point, it may take a lot longer. You will be notified once the installation is complete. To let you access USB devices, Zadig is a Windows application that installs generic USB drivers like WinUSB, libusb-win32/libusb0.sys, or libusbK.Zadig does exactly what you tell it to do. If you select the wrong device, and Zadig happen to replace its driver, the responsibility is entirely yours. Zadig will try to warn about common system drivers, such as HID or Mass Storage, that you don't usually want to replace, but there are only so many drivers Zadig can know about. You can zoom in and out of the spectrum by using the Zoom slider which is to the left of the word zoom.

If the installation was successful, you should end up with something similar to this: Notice how the driver is now being displayed (in green) and indicates WinUSB. WinUSB is one of the drivers supported by libusb-1.0.If you are using a RTL-SDR.com V3 dongle, view our V3 users guide to learn how to use the special features like HF direct sampling and the bias tee. If it is a newer V4 dongle, visit our V4 users guide. The first screen you will see when launching Zadig is the User Account Control prompt displayed below. This is because the application needs to run with administrative privileges. To be able to install a driver, you should answer Yes. First test to make sure that it is not the fault of a bad USB extension cable by plugging the dongle directly into the PC. Try other USB cables if possible. If the USB connector is loose, gently pressing on the top of the USB connector on the RTL-SDR and making a small indentation can help tighten the connection. If it still disconnects often the dongle may be faulty and you should ask for a replacement.

The program doesn't have many features, making it simple to learn. In the event that you want to learn every detail about the files that have been added to your system, you may expand its interface to disclose a log. There will be no guesswork because information about each supported driver is also available. Today, the easiest way to swap the "inbox" driver with WinUSB is using a utility called Zadig. Per their docs: SDR# is the most commonly used SDR program on Windows. We recommend it as one of the easiest to setup and use with the RTL-SDR.This is most likely due to your USB port underpowering the RTL-SDR. This can easily happen with long USB cables, or unpowered hubs. Please try connecting the RTL-SDR directly to the PC to confirm. Very often I'll find myself with a device like a Particle Photon, Wilderness Labs Meadow, or some STM32 device that uses the ST Bootloader. One of the applications that might prove to be useful in the situation depicted above is Zadig, as it provides you with multiple straightforward features. Portable tool In its simplest mode of operation, Zadig is meant to install a libusb compatible driver, for a device that does not yet have such a driver installed. Zadig is a free and open-source device driver installation utility developed by the French software developer libwdi. It is designed to install device drivers for USB devices on Windows in cases where the operating system does not automatically recognize the device or install the appropriate driver.

Alternatively for HDSDR you can also use extio_rtl_tcp which will allow you to connect to an rtl_tcp server. CubicSDR Set Up Guide (Tested on XP and above) (Works with RTL-SDR Blog V4/V3) Windows updates sometimes overwrite the SDR drivers with broken Windows ones. Simply run zadig again and install the drivers again to fix it.Choosing the appropriate drivers can be done by selecting them from the dedicated list. More so, you can specify the device you want to install the driver for by choosing it from the combo menu. It is also possible to display all the detected devices by toggling the corresponding function from the Options menu. USB driver installer
